BETSY SCHOW is the TODAY Show featured author of the non-fiction book, Finished Being Fat; however she’s been mixing up real life and fantasy for as long as she can remember. If someone were to ask about her rundown truck, she’s 100% positive that mechanical gremlins muck up her engine. And the only reason her house is dirty is because the dust bunnies have gone on strike.  She lives in Utah with her own knight in geeky armor and their two princesses (that can totally shapeshift into little beasts). When not writing or talking to folks about “finishing”, Betsy works as a Co-Association Director for Odyssey of the Mind, an international program that helps teach kids problem solving and creative thinking (or how to turn their toasters into robots).

Her debut novel, Spelled, cames out June 2015 from Sourcebooks and is the first book in the Storymaker Series. She is represented by Michelle Witte, Mansion Street Literary Agency.

  1. One day this week I said a silent prayer out of desperation for something to come to me that would give me what I need to suceed in losing the weight. Like you I have a very fit nice looking husband which makes it all the worse. I was surfing and saw your website and have ordered the book. Going to try one more time.

    1. Oh Pam. Oddly enough, just before I went on the Today show, I prayed “Let me answer someone’s prayer today.” Thank you for letting me know it might be you. Don’t give up and you can never fail. You will finish! You can do it. I believe in you.

  2. Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed your book. I finished it in two days after picking it up at the library. I almost past it by, as someone with an eating disorder, the word fat is considered a trigger but I enjoy running and the back of the book really peaked my interest. Your hubby reminds me of so much of mine with the way he handled the does this make me look fat, I am fat and my start and stop of weight loss moments that I read some passages to him out of the book and we both had a good chuckle. Keep up the amazing work and blessing to you and your family.

    1. Thank you Sheila, I am glad you picked up the book and enjoyed it. I understand the hurt of the word Fat. That’s why I used it in the title. I wanted to be done calling myself that. Good luck on both your eating struggles and the running :)

  3. I just finished your book and loved it. It was a random purchase at night on my Kindle and am so glad I chose it. It seems like it was just what I needed to read at this time. I am not particularly overweight but am extremely hard on myself, that if I could just get these last 7 pounds off then I would be acceptable, okay, deserving of happiness. I have started many Beachbody programs and finished only 6 out of the 8 weeks. I have run two half marathons and then completely stopped working out afterward, scared it would be too hard to begin again. I am very hot and cold, all or nothing. Reading some of the critical comments you would say to yourself was so similar to the own voice in my head. I had an epiphany — what if my motivation to eat right and exercise was because I loved myself not because I hated myself. I have only been practicing this for a few days now, but already it has made a huge difference in my life. I am slowly becoming more compassionate towards myself and am a happier wife and Mom of two little ones. Your honest writing was both hilarious and inspiring. Keep it up!

  4. Betsy, I identified with so much in your book; I’d given up on life pretty much, feeding my mind too much with the negative things I’d been told repeatedly as a child (“you’ll never amount to anything,” “you’re stupid”) I too tried suicide at one point with pills, and that is actually the first time I knew without a doubt a had a Heavenly Father who loved me although I wouldn’t find the church till years later. I am a good twenty years older than you are, and running is not an option for me but walking is great – I just completed my first 10K walk; I am taking piano and voice lessons – hanging on to the addage that it’s never too late, rather than the can’t teach an old dog one :) Thank your for sharing your experiences in such a personal and entertaining way. You are a great inspiration.

I have never written to anyone about a book or on a website etc. That’s just not me. However, your book left a strong emotional “thud” inside my head and heart. I have to say when you finished your marathon I cried right along with you!!! You touched on so many similar aspects of my life.
In the space of time it took me to read this book (3 days) I believe I had many layers of my own epiphanies.
Thank you for sharing your philosophy of finishing!! I hope you won’t mind but I would like to make them my own!!!
    God bless!!!

    1. Thank you so much! I’m very glad you decided to write this time. I’m only sorry it took me so long to find it. Hearing things like this makes me so happy and I am honored to welcome you into the fold finisher’s!

  7. There’s going to be another book right? The story of kato and Dorothea can’t be finished. Do you know how many you’re going to write? I just finished and im so upset there isn’t more and it wasn’t longer. I stumbled on the book in barnes and noble and I couldn’t resist. Waiting for more, or if you say there won’t be more, just might kill me!
